Canal Cruisers

On Friday last week we went to a place that hires out 'Narrow Boats' and we hired a 70 footer. We drove it down the canal to a 'Lock' and spent the night moored on the side of the canal. It was freezing that night because the heating only works when the engine has been running for a long time. The next day we went through the lock and I suggest you watch the videos of the lock to find out how it works. We continued down the river to a place called Bath which has some famous Roman baths that we didn't see. On Sunday we came back along the canal, went through the lock in the other direction, then motored past the mariner where we had hired the narrow boat and continued for about 2 miles along the canal. On our last day we went about 1 km along the canal to one of the turning spots where we turned around and headed back to the mariner to return the boat.
My job was to help Dad by controlling the speed lever when he asked me to go faster or slower. Sometimes I did the right speed and other times I put on too much gas and we went screaming along almost out of control.
On the way back to Sarah and Pete's place, we called in to see a very famous manor house and some ancient stones at a place called Avebury. The stones were set in their places for some type of worship by the ancient Britons in about 3500 BC. Then we went to a place called the 'Long Barrow' which was a burial place for the ancient people who lived in the area. It was carefully made with huge boulders and covered with earth. These places are the oldest remains of ancient civilizations in the world.

Londinium

Once upon a time there was a small boy called Oscar who visited London. His first peril was the London Eye and when he saw it he was concerned that it might topple over into the River Thames when he was in it. But facing his fears he stepped into the cocoon capsule and went up, up, up and saw all over London and realised it wasn't as scary as he first thought. Apparently, some people love the Eye so much, they have their birthday party on it.
Next he went on a river boat cruise down the Thames. One of the bridges the boat went under was made by ladies when the men were away in the 2nd World War. The stop they got off at was the Tower of London. Inside the Tower they saw loads and loads of crowns worn by the Kings and Queens of England over hundreds of years. Amongst them was a ridicously small crown that had belonged to Queen Victoria who was rather large. Oscar learned that the Tower used to host wild beasts such as a leopard that ate an umbrella because it was so cross at being caged. He also learned that there was a bear there that had died from being fed too much sweat stuff.
Oscar went several times to a museum called 'the Natural History Museum'. He was impressed with the quality of the exhibitions such as the 'mammals one' which had lots of stuffed animals such as a blue whale, dugong, elephant, rhino, hippo, giraffe etc etc.
Unfortunately Oscar's parents forced him to blog and blog which made him thoroughly angry!

Exploring Kent

LAst Wednesday we went to Bedgebury Pinetum. There are lots of different Pine Trees at Bedgebury. It has also got little play grounds dotted all over the place. The two that I especially enjoyed were the first 2 because they were both very interested. One was like a Pirate Ship and the other was a play village. Another favourite was a long rope which lots of people could stand on and swing it back and forth with your body. There is also a thing call 'Go Ape' which is all over the place where you swing from rope to rope through the trees.

You must have seen my commentary on Bodium Castle. This visit was a highlight of my trip so far. I enjoyed it because it was old and it was big and it was fun to explore.

Brugge

For the last 3 days we have been in Brrrrugge, Belgium. Do you know that Brugge is the world's capital of chocolate. It even has its own chocolate museum where they let you taste the chocolates they make. There is also a light museum that tells you all the history of lamps and lights going back maybe 5 million years ago (or more!!) In Brugge there is a chip museum that tells you the history of chips but we didn't go because we used our chip money on chips instead. Chips are very good in Brugge.
We went on a boat ride along the canals of Brugge. It was very good because I got to see the sights including a castle, a tall clock tower, a very large church and lots of tiny little brick (Granma, you should go to Brugge some day).

Chateau de Versailles

Today we went to Chateau de Versaille. Chateau de Versaille is a very very famous castle that homed the Louis family. There are lots of famous artworks and pictures on the walls and the celling of the rooms. You can read my sister's blog to find out about how crowded it was in the place, and also a little story about a dog called schnitzel von krumm and Hairy McClarey.

Do you know that that place was first built by Louis XIII (Louis the 13th) as a hunting lodge, then Louis XIV made another wing in the palace and turned it into a castle. Then Louis XV made another wing in the castle and it was completely finished by Louis XVI.

One funny story was about one of the Queens called Marie Antoinette, who lived in the castle escaped through a secret door in her room from rioting crowds that were attacking the castle from the outside The door led straight into the Kings apartments. How funny can it get!

In the Castle there was lots of famous pieces of art like fancy chairs and stuff, and brilliant pictures of the family. And also each room - everything that's in it - had the same colours as the wall and curtains! The gardens of the castle are so big that you probably could fill up a whole maybe million sheep in it and still have loads of spaces.

au revoir

Boat tour

Today we went round Derwentwater lake on boats. First we got on a boat with not much rainproof compartments so we got wet. Then we got off and walked up a hill and over a stone bridge. Then we went back down to the jetty to wait for the boat to come. When we got on the boat it had much more warm spaces with not too much outside wetness. I was glad we were on that boat. Then we got off another stop where we walked to a fancy hotel where we had lunch. Then we took a walk in the hotel's gardens. Then we had to go back to the jetty to wait for the boat, this time the boat was 7 minutes late. Then after that we got off at another stop and walked to the next stop. After we got to that stop we walked another way to stop number 6. Then we got on a boat and headed back to Keswick. Dictated by Oscar who was too tired to type. :)

Windsor castle 8.10.2011

Today we went to the village where windsor castle is. When we got there we had to get tickets to go in To the castle. Before we went in we got some special audio stories that where on little radios. When we went in we where going to princes victoria's doll house {it is the largest doll house in the world} but there was a long line of people that were going to go through the door towards the doll house, so we went through a door that didn't have such a long line. When we got in we went through a room that lot's of costly treasures in it. Unfortunately someone went too close to one of the case's which the treasure was in and set the alarm off. Luckily they didn't get in trouble. We went into lots of different rooms, and saw amazing pieces of artwork and furniture. At the end we had a photo next to a beefeater.

After that we said goodbye to Vaughan and Sam and went to my cousin Elijah's place in Derby.

Today Oscar's crazy teacher showed his mum how to set up a blog so that he can spend hours letting his class know how much fun he's having writing on the computer  :)  Oscar will probably type really fast with all the wrong fingers and this will annoy his mummy every time she notices.  Look here to find out about how many fights they've had over typing practice during their adventure!

Guess what Oscar...I put typing tournament onto this computer too!  he he he
